Proverb คือ สำนวน หรือสุภาษิต ไม่ต้องแปลกใจค่ะว่าต่างประเทศมีสุภาษิตเหมือนกันด้วยหรือ แน่นอนค่ะว่าทุกประเทศย่อมมีสำนวน เปรียบเปรยเป็นของตนเอง ในเชิงความหมายอาจจะคล้ายกัน จนถึงเหมือนกันทุกนัยความเลยก็ได้ ฉะนั้นวันนี้ดิฉันจึงมีสำนวนสุภาษิตใหม่ของภาษาอังกฤษมาให้ทุกคนได้ลองจำไปใช้กันดู ค่ะ

PROVERBS.	สุภาษิต
Actions speak louder than words.	การกระทำสำคัญกว่าการพูด
After a storm comes a calm.	ชั่วเจ็ดทีดีเจ็ดหน
All road lead to Rome.	มีหลายทางที่จะไปถึงจุดหมายเดียวกัน
All that glitters is not gold.	สิ่งแวววาวทั้งหลายมิใช่ทองเสมอไป
All things are difficult before they are easy.	ลำบากก่อนไปสบายเมื่อปลายมือ
The grass is greener on the other side.	ของต้องห้าม ย่ามใจ ให้ประสงค์
As well be hanged for a sheep as a lamb.	ตกกระไดพลอยโจน
As you make your bed, so you must lie in it.	ทำดีได้ดี ทำชั่วได้ชั่ว
A bad workman always blames his tools.	รำไม่ดีโทษปี่โทษกลอง
Barking dogs seldom bite.	หมาเห่ามักไม่กัด
Beauty is but skin deep.	สวยแต่รูป จูบไม่หอม
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.	ลางเนื้อ ชอบลางยา
Beggars must not be choosers.	ยามไร้ เด็ดดอกหญ้า แซมผม
Better be sure than sorry.	กันไว้ดีกว่าแก้
Better be the head of a dog than the tail of a lion.	เป็นราชาในกระท่อม ดีกว่าเป็นขี้ข้าในปราสาท
Better bend than break.	จงเป็นเยี่ยงต้นอ้อทีลู่ลม
Better late than never.	สายดีกว่าขาด
Better the devil you know than the devil you don't know.	รู้กับไม่รู้ เลือกที่รู้ไว้ดีกว่า
A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush.	สิบเบี้ยใกล้มือ ยี่สิบไกลมือ
Birds of a feather flock together.	สัตว์พันธุ์เดียวกันย่อมสังสรรค์ร่วมกัน
Blood is thicker than water.	เลือดข้นกว่าน้ำ
Books and friends should be few but good.	จะคบมิตรคิดให้ดีอย่ามีมาก อ่านลำบากมากเล่ม
	หนังสือหนา   น้อยเล่มน้อยคนเถิดเกิดปัญญา
	เลือกคุณค่าเลิศไซร้ใช่ปริมาณ
Brevity is the soul of wit.	พูดสั้น ๆ นั้นฟังง่ายเข้าใจดี
The bull must be taken by the horns.	ยามผจญความยากวิบากนั้น จงสู้มันสุดชีวีอย่าหนีหน้า
A bully is always a coward.	พาลชนคือคนขลาด
Burn not your house to fright the mouse away.	ขี่ช้างจับตั๊กแตน
Busiest men find the most time.	ยิ่งขยัน ยิ่งมีเวลามาก
Call a spade a spade.	พูดให้ตรงจุดดีกว่าจะน่าฟัง
A cat has nine lives.	ไม่ถึงที่ตายก็ไม่วายชีวาวาตม์
Charity begins at home.	ความรักใคร่ไม่ตรีเกิดที่บ้าน แผ่ไพศาลออกไปในภายหลัง
The child is father of the man.	เด็กวันนี้ คือผู้ใหญ่วันหน้า
Children should be seen and not heard.	เป็นเด็กควรรู้จักกาลเทศะ
Cleanliness is next to godliness.	สะอาดกายเจริญวัย  สะอาดใจเจริญสุข
Clothes do not make the man.	คนมิได้งามเพราะแต่ง
Courtesy  costs nothing.	จะอ่อนน้อม อ่อนไว้ไม่สิ้นเปลือง
Cowards die many times before their deaths.	คนขลาดตายหลายครั้ง
The cowl does not make the monk.	เป็นภิกษุสงฆ์มิใช่ตรงจีวร
Cut your coat according to your cloth.	นกน้อยทำรังน้อยแต่พอตัว
Death is the great leveller.	ทุกคนไปทันกันหมดที่เชิงตะกอน
Discretion is the better part of valour.	กล้านักมักบิ่น
Do not cast your pearls before swine.	อย่ายื่นแก้วให้วานร
Don't count your chickens before they are hatched.	อย่าหมายน้ำบ่อหน้า
Don't cut the bough you are standing on.	ให้แน่ใจเสี่ยก่อนจึงค่อยทำ
Don't make a mountain out of a molehill.	อย่าขี่ช้างจับตั๊กแตน
Don't put all your eggs in one basket.	จงระวัง อย่าประมาท
Don't put the cart before the horse.	ทำสิ่งใดจงทำไปให้ถูกหลัก  ไหนควรจักทำก่อน
	หรือทำหลัง  อย่าปนปะคละยุ่งกันนุงนัง หน้าไว้
	หลัง  หลังไว้หน้าพาเสียการ
Don't ride the high horse.	อย่าใฝ่สูงให้เกินศักดิ์
Don't wash your dirty linen in public.	อย่าสาวไส้ให้กากิน
A drowning man will clutch at a straw.	คนจมน้ำ จักไขว้คว้า แม้หญ้าฟาง
The early bird catches the worm.	ถึงก่อนได้ก่อน
Easier said than done.	พูดง่ายแต่ทำยาก
Every ass likes to hear himself bray.	คนโง่ชอบอวดฉลาด
Every cloud has a silver lining.	ชีวิตนี้ยังมีหวัง
Every family has a skeleton in the cupboard.	ไฟในอย่านำออก  ไฟนอกอย่านำเข้า
Every man has his price.	เอาสินการสอดจ้าง แข็งดั่งเหล็กเงินง้าง อ่อนได้โดยใจ
Every man is his own worst enemy.	ศัตรูร้าย คือนิสัยชั่ว ของตัวเอง
Everything comes to him who waits.	ช้า ๆ ได้พร้าสองเล่มงาม
Evil be to him who evil thinks.	หากจิตคิดชั่วไซร้ ชั่วนั้นพลันสนอง
The exception proves the rule.	กฎเกณฑ์ทุกข้อย่อมมีข้อยกเว้น
Experience is the mother of wisdom.	ผิดเป็นครู
An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth.	ให้ทุกข์แก่ท่าน ทุกข์นั้นถึงตัว
The eye is bigger than the belly.	คนตะกละมักไม่ประมาณท้อง
Familiarity breeds contempt.	เล่นกับหมา หมาเลียปาก เล่นกับสาก สากต่อยหัว
First come, first served.	ถึงก่อนได้ก่อน
Forbidden fruit is sweetest.	ยิ่งห้ามเหมือนยิ่งยุ
Forewarned is  forearmed.	กันไว้ดีกว่าแก้
Fortune knocks at least once at every man's gate.	โอกาสทอง มักผ่านมา เพียงหนเดียว จึงควร
	เฉลียวฉวยโอกาส อย่าคลาดหมาย
A friend in need is a friend indeed'	เพื่อนแท้คือเพื่อนในยามยาก
Give a thief enough rope and he'll hang himself.	ให้โอกาสคนชั่วทำชั่ว ความชั่วนั้นจะบั่นทอนตัวเขาเอง
Give and take.	มิตรจิตรก็มิตรใจ
Give knaves an inch and they will take a yard.	ให้เฟื้องเอาสลึง
The grapes are sour.	หมาจิ้งจอกกับองุ่นเปรี้ยว
The greatest talkers are the least doers.	คนพูดมากมักทำน้อย
Half a loaf is better than no bread.	จงพอใจในสิ่งที่ได้มา แม้จะไม่สมใจเท่าใดนัก
Half the word knows not how the other half lives.	ต่างคนก็ต่างอยู่ ซีกโลกโน้นบ่รู้ (คนรวย) ซีกโลกนี้เป็นไฉน (คนจน)
Haste makes waste.	ช้าเป็นการนานเป็นคุณ
He laughs best who laughs last.	หัวเราะทีหลังดังกว่า
He that cannot obey cannot command.	ผู้ที่ไม่เคยเชื่อฟัง ก็จะออกคำสั่งไม่เป็น
He that has a great nose thinks everybody is speaking of it.	จงอย่าทำตัวเป็นวัวสันหลังหวะ
He who begins many things, finisher but few.	คนจับจดทำอะไรมักไม่สำเร็จ
He who excuses himself accuses himself.	คนที่ชอบอภัยให้ตัวเอง มักคิดว่าตนผิด
He who hesitates is lost.	ความลังเล นำไปให้พลาดหวัง
He who pays the piper calls the tune.	อยากเป็นใหญ่เป็นได้ถ้ามีเงิน
He who would climb the ladder must begin at the bottom.	การขึ้นบันได ต้องไต่ไปทีละขั้น
Health is better than wealth.	ร่างกายสมบูรณ์ ดีกว่าทรัพย์สมบูรณ์
Hitch your wagon to a star.	จงตั้งความมุ่งหมายไว้ให้สูง
Hope springs eternal in the human breast.	ชีวิตนี้ยังมีหวัง
A house divided against itself cannot stand.	การแตกความสามัคคีในหมู่คณะ นำมาซึ่งความพินาศ
Hunger is the best sauce.	ความหิวทำให้อาหารออกรส
Idle folk have the least leisure.	คนขี้เกียจมักไม่มีเวลาพัก
If at first you don't succeed, try, try, try again.	ถ้าพยายามครั้งแรกไม่สำเร็จ ก็อย่าท้อถอย
If it were not for hope, the heart would break.	หากหมดหวังก็หมดพลังใจ
If the blind lead the blind, both shall fall into the ditch.	เตี้ยอ้มค่อม
If the mountain will not come to Mohammed,	ถ้าเอาชนะเองไม่ได้ ก็จงเชื่อฟังผู้ชนะก็แล้วกัน
Mohammed must go to the mountain.
If there were no clouds, we should not enjoy the sun.	ถ้าไม่เคยทุกข์ จะรู้หรือว่าสุขนั้นเป็นไฉน
If you want a thing well done, do it yourself.	อย่ายืมจมูกคนอื่นมาหายใจ
In for a penny, in for a pound.	เลยตามเลย
In wine there is truth.	คนเมามักพูดจริง
It's a long lane that has no turning.	หากโชคไม่ดี วันหน้ามันจะต้องดีขึ้น เพราะโชค
	จะไม่ดีตลอดไปนั้นไม่ได้
It is easy to be wise after the event.	อวดรู้ทีหลังเหตุเกิดมันง่ายมาก
It is no use crying over spilt milk.	ผิดพลาดไปแล้ว ก็แล้วกันไป จะร้องไห้ไปทำไม ร้องไปก็ไม่ได้คืนมา
It is too late to lock the stable when the horse has been stolen.	วัวหายล้อมคอก
It is useless to flog a dead horse.	อย่าฟื้นฝอยหาตะเข็บ เราก็จิต คิดดูเล่าเขาก็ใจ
	ปลูกอื่นใยปลูกไมตรีดีกว่าพาล
It never rains but it pours.	เวลาโชคร้าย มักโชคร้ายพร้อมกันหลาย ๆ ครั้ง
It takes all sorts to make a world.	น้ำพึ่งเรือเสือพึ่งป่าอัชฌาสัย
It takes two to make a quarrel.	ตบมือข้างเดียวไม่ดัง
A jack of all trades is master of none.	อย่าจับปลาหลายมือ
Judge not, that ye be not judged.	ดูตัวเองก่อนจึงค่อยค่อนเขา
Keep something for a rainy day.	จะสะสมทรัพย์ไว้ในยามยาก
Kill not the goose that lays the golden eggs.	อย่าโลภมาก จะลาภหาย
Know your own faults before blaming others for theirs.	ว่าแต่เขา อิเหนาเป็นเอง
Knowledge is power.	วิทยาการคือทางไปสู่อำนาจ
Laugh and the world laughs with you, weep and weep alone.	เพื่อนกินหาง่ายเพื่อนตายหายาก
Learn to walk before you run.	จะพากเพียรเขียนอ่านการหนังสือ จะได้หรือรวด
	เดียวจบสมุดไข  ต้องค่อยอ่านคอยเพียรค่อยเขียน
	ไป  มีหรือไม่ใครวิ่งได้ก่อนเดิน
The leopard cannot change his spots.	เสือดาวเปลี่ยนลายไม่ได้ฉันใด ทรชนก็ไม่อาจเปลี่ยนสันดานชั่วฉันนั้น
Let sleeping dogs lie.	อย่าแกว่งเท้าเข้าหาเสี้ยน
A liar is not believed when he tells the truth.	เด็กเลี้ยงแกะ
Like father, like son.	ลูกไม้ย่อมหล่นไม่ไกลต้น
Live and learn.	อยู่ไป เรียนไป
Live and let live.	น้ำพึ่งเรือเสือพึ่งป่าอัชฌาสัย เราก็จิต คิดดูเล่าเขาก็ใจ ปลูกอื่นใย ปลูกไมตรีดีกว่าพาล
Live not to eat, but eat to live.	กินเพื่ออยู่ อย่าอยู่เพื่อกิน
Look before you leap.	จะทำกิจ คิดการให้รอบคอบ
Love is blind.	ความรักทำให้คนตาบอด
Love me, love my dog.	ขอให้รักฉันอย่างไม่ลืมหูลืมตา
Make hay while the sun shines.	น้ำขึ้นให้รีบตัก

Nothing is given so freely as advice.	ไม่มีอะไรให้ได้ง่ายเท่าคำแนะนำ
Once bitten, twice shy.	โดนเข้าครั้ง ยั้งไปนาน
One is  never too old to learn.	ไม่มีใครแก่เกินเรียน
Patience is a virtue.	จงตั้งมั่นในขันติ
The pen is mightier than the sword.	ปากกาน่ากลัวกว่ากระบอกปืน
Rats desert a sinking ship.	มองเห็นภัยมีก็เผ่นหนีเอาตัวรอด
A rich man's joke is always funny.	มีเงินเขาก็นับว่าน้อง มีทองเขาก็นับว่าพี่
A rolling stone gathers no moss.	คนจับจดทำอะไรไม่เป็นผล ใครจะทนมั่นหมายคนหลายใจ
Rome was not built in a day.	อะไรก็ไม่พ้นความพยายาม

To err is human.	สี่เท้ายังรู้พลาด นักปราชญ์ยังรู้พลั้ง สองขาโด่เด่ก็ต้องเซไปบ้าง

Virtue is its own reward.	กุศลกรรมทำให้เกิดกุศลจิต
Waste not, want not.	มีสลึงพึงประจบให้ครบบาท จักไม่ขาดสิ่งของต้องประสงค์
The way to a man's heart is through his stomach.	เสน่ห์ปลายจวักผัวรักจนตาย
What the eye doesn't see the heart doesn't grieve over.	ไม่รู้เสียแล้วก็แล้วไป
When in Rome do as the Romans do.	เข้าเมืองตาหลิ่วก็ต้องหลิ่วตาตาม
When the cat is away the mice will play.	แมวไม่อยู่ หนูร่าเริง
Where there's a will there's a way.	ความพยายามอยู่ที่ไหน ความสำเร็จอยู่ที่นั้น
You cannot get blood out of a stone.	อย่าหาเลือดกับปู
You cannot teach an old dog new tricks.	ไม้แก่ดัดยาก
You may lead a horse to water, but you cannot make him drink.	อย่าข่มเขา โคขืน ให้กินหญ้า
